NoteLynX Pro

NoteLynX Image
Outliner & Hierarchical Tree Note Editor. An Organizer for all your thoughts, ideas & information using cross referenced "Friend" links to create personal data networks of arbitrary complexity. Multiple parents feature allows a child note to be linked to more than one parent although defined only once... very useful when something doesn't fit into a single category. Unique ability to create multiple tree roots within a single network that simplifies the creation of family tree-like structures.

NoteLynX Pro has these extra features
  • Sort (alpha-numeric)
  • Find (with pattern matching)
  • Bookmarks
  • Tasks/Todo (not dated)
  • Night/Day Mode
  • Templates: using 'Copy/Paste Note' to 'clone' sections of an outline
  • Text Formatting
  • Export to XML for backups and sharing
  • Export to HTML for printing, hosting online or importing into MS Word
  • Auto Export: which, with 3rd party apps DropBox and DropSpace, allows periodic cloud backup
  • Style Sheets: giving global control over such things as fonts and text size
  • Cross References: using 'Friend' links to create non-hierarchical structures
  • Multiple parents: a note may appear to be in more than one place although defined only once... very useful when something doesn't fit into a single category or for family-tree-like structures

Will a future update have sort features added?

AstroDean said...

Notes currently are sorted by link type. Lists could, in the future, be sorted alphabetically. Please let me know if there are other ways you may wish lists to be sorted.

I bought the Pro Version because it said you make Task / To Do lists, but I can't see any way at all to create a task with due date etc. AstroDean please help!

To mark a note as "done" you long press the note and select "done" from the context menu. This strikes-out the title and turns the whole note grey. To reset, repeat the process or to reset all todos, use the main 'android' menu option. These are not dated todos... I'm sorry if you thought they were.

Bougth Pro version. Not bad. But there are some questions regarding future updates:
1. Any plans for making other languages interface (e.g. Russian)?
2. Don't You plan to make alternative display of a tree? Let me to explain what I mean. The fact that any child can have more than one ancestor is good and useful. But if I need a classical tree (where a child can have only one ancestor), it would be great to choose tree type when creating new project, and have a possibility to display such project's structure as classical tree-note (e.g. like in ErgoNotes for WindowsXP\WinMobile or like left "Folders" part of Windows Explorer window in WinXP), cause the present ay of tree display is not obvious to understand and not so handy when using classical tree structures.

1. I don't have the resources to do so myself but if someone wanted to translate the User Guide I would be happy to post a link so it could be downloaded.

2. A dual display mode for single or multi-inheritance is an interesting idea. I will log this as a new feature request.

NoteLynxPro is the closest to perfect outliner I have met but we really need more powerful capability to edit the nodes content.
I am all to keep everything full text but would a markdown (http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/) or ReStructured (http://docutils.sourceforge.net/rst.html) editor be doable ? (I have a soft spot for the later, being a python guy) but markdown might closer to your design since it can include any html.
Being able to keep meaning from formating is important for me though, may be for you too.

The big trouble right now is to do lists in an efficient way (and lists of list) the ul li stance really does not cut it.

AstroDean said...

Thanks for the feedback. NoteLynX actually started out with a form of 'markdown' (my own design) but I eventually decided to drop it in favor of the current, mostly 'pre-scripted', HTML after several users asked me for it. I could perhaps offer markup and markdown modes... I'll look into the matter.

Will you enable NoteLynx Pro to take advantage of a full 10.1" tablet in landscape and/or in portrait modes?

Thanks,
Rob

AstroDean said...

Actually, it is already on my list of feature requests to have some kind of split screen, tree on left, note on right, for large screens. Currently, the screen layout is the same regardless of size.

I bought the Pro version while on CM7 ROM for the Kindle Fire.
Now using the CM9 cannot download it, says it's not compatible with my device?!? Free version works well on both ROMs. Please fix!!!

AstroDean said...

Zav, NoteLynX Pro has only been tested on Android 2/3/4, not on any custom android build... this may even be a problem with CM9. However, if you email me, there is something we might try.

Great app, however I have an issue exporting notes written in Russian to xml, html.

AstroDean said...

iskk333, what happens when you try to export notes in Russian?

P.A. said...

Nice Work. Dual display on tablets seems like the only serious omission.

P.A. said...

Also, switching back and forth from other applications makes the cursor position reset to the title. This has discouraged me from making long notes, which is a key attraction for this app.

AstroDean said...

Petros Ant, thanks for pointing that out. I'll see if I can find a way to restore the cursor position on re-entry to the editor. However, it is probably good practice to periodically 'ok' long notes else you run the risk of loosing all your typing if something catastrophic were to happen.

I'm interested in the Pro version. My cheap Android 2.3 tablet doesn't support Market. Is there a way to get the .apk directly from you, or outside of Market?

AstroDean said...

Charlie, not at present, but I'm looking into ways that this may be achieved.

luqleckie said...

Please, please, please, dated To Dos with alarms. Would be such a powerful piece of software for Android

AstroDean said...

luqleckie, thanks, I'll put that on my list of feature requests.

Could you elaborate on the coud backup with third party feature, please? Which third party are you referring to?

AstroDean said...

Rsamanyaphoto,
When NoteLynX Pro is used in conjunction with cloud storage apps DropBox and DropSpace, you can set up automatic periodic cloud backup.

After DropSpace is installed, set up a sync between the NoteLynX export folder and a folder in your remote DropBox account. Remember to turn on Auto Export in Settings.

Thank you, figured it out after purchasing. Will be nice if your explanation is mentioned in the description of the application.

A few request, please:

- reduce the space between nodes. Currently if we don't have any note and only a title, there is still one empty line. I would like that empty line removed so I can see more outlines.

-percentage indicator of completed todos. If a parent consists of 10 todos, out of which 2 are completed, then and indication of 20% after the title, in text or bar, like Natara Bonsai palm before. This will, I think, mean that we need to specify whether the outline is a todo or not, unlike current simple done/not-done.

-sync with Gdocs so we can view our outlines online when our device is not with us.

Updates have improved the app a lot, great job.

A few new ideas/requests that would make many of your competitors obsolete:

TAGS/HASHTAGS:

Tags, that actually work like searching: If a user places an # symbol before a word, then an automatic search launches that finds all other notes that include the same #word (catch notepad app is making a living out of this and is the other must-have notetaking app i currently use heavily)

ICONS:

Ability to place some sort of icon before each title (like coloured flags, or checkmarks, or rating stars, etc). Alternatively titles could become colourable to achieve similar practicality.

Top mindmapping apps like mindjet are really appealing because of this (and is the app i actually switched from to yours - the icons/colourable titles thing being the big arguement in favor of mindjet).

Example: I have some lists that consist of "good" and "bad" things. Because no icons/colourable titles are available, i'm resorting to a deeper tree structure like this:

Theme
- Theme (bad)
- Theme (good)
- Theme (neutral)

P.A. said...

Regarding tags i forgot to clarify this:

when a user places the # symbol infront of a word (#example) it becomes a clickable link that launches the said search when clicked.

P.A. said...

Now that i think of it..

PASSWORD PROTECTED FILES:

That could make your app useful for sensitive information or a diary etc (also used by competitors like wikimind)

(Sorry for spamming your comments today)

Here goes my ideas:

- Trimming when adding a title
- Trimming when searching (drop the last space and the first one if provided)

Some ideas become very ambitious:
- Exchange with Evernote. Evernote allows you to send the note to almost any application. Why not Notelynx? This would launch Notelynx to the big leagues quickly.
- Your own cloud service (yes, this is a big one, just feed for your wildest dreams).

I'm not pretty sure about tags with a mark (#). I know Catch deals very well with this. But I want my notes to be copied to other places (WordPress, email, speeches, etc.) I want not to be forced to clear the hashes all the time. I agree that tags must be searchable and easy to add.

A question: How may I copy from one project to another? This would be great.

JPMarichal said...

Another idea: When you're writting a message (SMS) in Android, you start with uppercase at first, then the second letter is lowercase authomatically. This also happens after a dot or another punctuation sign (? ! : ). I wonder if it's hard to replicate this behavior in Notelynx.

When I create a 'friend' it seems to create a child but with a yellow arrow.
What is the difference between 'friend' and 'child'? Can I do something with one that I cannot do with the other?
Thanks!

AstroDean said...

Tommy, a friend link may be used as a cross reference, footnote, or non-hierarchical data structure. A child note is usually used to indicate a refinement of an idea, sub category or hierarchical data structure.

could be more intuitive and easier to use. for lists, i would like to enter all line items at once, then define the parent/child/sibling relationship simply by hitting a tab button, line by line. i've been using thinkbook as my outliner on the ios platform. thinkbook is very intuitive and super easy to use (though it may not seem so at first). maybe you can take a look at this and incorporate some features?

Can you please help me. I bought the Pro version and installed it on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. My problem is that when I launch it I go straight to the Help file with no Menu or device to get into a global menu. I always get the content menu & haven't been able to create a New Project.

Thanks in advance.

Hello AstroDean. I am using the pro version for a few months. I am using it too from my PC using bluestack (tks for the tip). Very happy. Small request, would it be possible to embed in XML or in notelynx directories linked images, in order to ease full backup/restore and cross machine use.

Todd said...

Is there a way to incorporate Night/Day mode into outline export to HTML other than by hand?

Unknown said...

Hi, if I may ask, would it be possible to incorporate a way to put this wiki online / make it public? I'd like to use this as my main wiki for documenting my world building process, but if I do, I'd have to find a comparative wiki that is online, and convert all material to it.

AstroDean said...

Todd, good suggestion. I may decide to set up HTML Export so it replicates the current display mode.

AstroDean said...

Jacky, you can put it online as an HTML Export, but only as a finished work. If you change it, you will have to repeat the process.

AstroDean said...

Vcube, I'll add that to my list of feature requests. Thanks

Could use protection for sensitive data. Encryption?

HJS said...

Can i store a file-link in the note that contains a PDF-Path on the device instead of Graphic. Then a File-open dialog let me choose the app?

AstroDean said...

Not currently, HJS, but I will add it to my list of feature requests.

HJS said...

How did i uncategorize a note and then choose an other categorize?

AstroDean said...

To uncategorize, select show parents from the menu and then cut the parent link to that category.

HJS said...

OK i then delete the bounded note. But this note is a multiparent belong to other notes, i don't want to delete them. Only the link has to be delete.

Had a problem with Notelynx on an old (actually, one of the first) Android tablets, probably due to the hardware. Developer literally answered initial email with 5 minutes. Later took more time than he should have to code up a diagnostic program for my use and emailed it to me.

I like also that I have never lost any notes taken. Very solid, actively developed program.

I have a nook and android phone. Do I have to purchase the pro on each device?

Unknown said...

I've bought Pro version. After putting a node under multiple parents, I'd like to remove it from one of those parents. But how?
Thanks in advance for your answer!
